Biography

Dr. John Shilling is an atmospheric chemist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) with expertise in measuring aerosol gas- and particle-phase chemical composition and gas-particle interactions. He came to PNNL in 2008 as a staff scientist and led a project to design and build an aerosol measurement laboratory and environmental chamber in PNNL's Atmospheric Measurement Laboratory. Dr. Shilling is an expert in aerosol gas and particle measurements and in applying mass spectrometry to problems in atmospheric chemistry. Currently, he is conducting laboratory experiments investigating the lifecycle of secondary organic aerosol particles and their climate-relevant properties under the Department of Energy (DOE)'s Atmospheric System Research program. A virtual tour of the chamber laboratory and and overview of this work can be found here.

In addition to laboratory studies, Dr. Shilling brings his mass spectrometry expertise to field missions. He served as the principal investigator for both gas- and particle-phase mass spectrometers deployed onboard DOE's G-1 research aircraft during several field campaigns including, CARES, TCAP, BBOP, GoAmazon 2014/5, HISCALE, and ACE-ENA.

Since 2015, Dr. Shilling has been the lead for the carbonaceous aerosol research element of the Integrated Cloud, Land-surface, and Aerosol System Study project. He has served as the aerosol translator for DOE's Atmospheric Raditaion Measurement program since 2019. In this role, he produces advanced data products from Atmospheric Raditaion Measurement program observational data. He was the lead for the Aerosol System Science Theme at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE Office of Science user facility at PNNL, from 2015-2018.
