Advanced Wireless Communications Lab
PNNL has established our next generation communications innovation studio, currently focused on 5G, to support the Lab’s mission to tackle some of the world’s greatest science and technology challenges in areas like national security, energy efficiency, and scientific discovery. PNNL is the first U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory to open a studio powered by Verizon 5G. This state-of-the-art lab has been established on the PNNL campus in Richland, Washington.
Research at this studio is focused on a variety of 5G related technologies, scientific applications driving cyber-resilient critical infrastructure, and advanced wireless communications research and development for federal agencies, benefiting a wide array of research, from chemistry and Earth sciences to the needs of first responders.
The Advanced Wireless Communications Lab came online in October 2020 and features:
- the first national laboratory with ultrawideband Verizon 5G;
- full R&D, testing and evaluation, and demo capabilities;
- edge and cloud computing resources; and
- 1,100 sq ft of space to support R&D, testing and evaluation, and partner demonstration.
Researchers will use the Advanced Wireless Communications Lab to address the following challenges facing 5G:
- potential disruption on established practices across industry, including power generation and utilities, transportation and transportation security, communication infrastructure, first-responder networks, and agriculture
- 5G implementation options
- spectrum availability
- data provenance and uninterrupted secure communications
- integration with advanced scientific discovery and national security missions
