PNNL’s expansive portfolio of security innovations includes technologies and instruments that range from sensors that aid in the identification of an active shooter in an indoor environment to copyright software that sifts through massive amounts of data, detects breaches, or looks for things of interest in large crowds. It also includes advanced security systems and innovations that can be used in airports or courts, such as the millimeter-wave imaging technology that quickly scans the whole body and shoes to detect hidden contraband. Among the innovations is the 2019 R&D 100 Gold Medalist Award winner VaporID, a vapor-sensing device that quickly detects narcotics and explosives down to the parts-per-quadrillion level in ambient air.
