Ben Bond-Lamberty Outstanding Editor 2022 for Biogeosciences
Earth scientist Ben Bond-Lamberty honored with award for work with top geoscience journal
Ben Bond-Lamberty, an Earth scientist, was recently awarded the Outstanding Editor Award 2022 for the scientific journal Biogeosciences. The journal is focused on all aspects of the interactions between the biological, chemical, and physical processes in terrestrial or extraterrestrial life with the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Biogeosciences aims to spotlight the interdisciplinary nature of these fields. According to Bond-Lamberty, “Biogeosciences is considered one of the top journals in its domain, and a pioneer in areas such as open review and encouraging for transparency and scientific reproducibility.”
As a researcher who studies forests, carbon cycling, the atmosphere, and ecosystem disturbance, Bond-Lamberty has the background and knowledge to contribute to the editorial process. “Reviewers and editors are the backbone of this system, and I’m delighted and honored to be recognized for my work with Biogeosciences,” says Bond-Lamberty.
Publishing in journals is an important part of the process to disseminate scientific information. Biogeosciences has a two-step public and then peer review process. As Bond-Lamberty states, “For better and for worse, publishing peer-reviewed papers remains a central part of the scientific process; it’s how information is turned into knowledge and understanding, in turn generating new questions.”
Ben Bond-Lamberty started his career as a forest ecologist amid smells of spruce trees and moist earth. Twenty years in, he studies forests near his home in Maryland, in northern Michigan, and the Arctic. Some of Bond-Lamberty's studies are field-oriented, but he also works in the modeling world and does extensive student mentoring. Recently, his work has focused on coastal forests, exploring how vulnerable trees and soils are to disturbances that come from humans, from storms, or that are part of natural ecological succession.
Bond-Lamberty is an Earth scientist in the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, based at the Joint Global Change Research Institute, a collaborative venture between PNNL and the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
He will accept his award at the annual meeting of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna, Austria, April 2023.
