Charles Serves as Guest Editor for One Health Special Collection
Lauren Charles, chief data scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and joint appointee with the Washington State University’s Paul Allen School for Global Health, was selected as a guest editor for a One Health collection, published by Nature’s Scientific Reports.
Submissions for the special collection opened in March with a due date of Friday, September 27, 2024, and will include research papers authored by experts from around the world.
According to Scientific Reports, “Across the world, increasingly complex health and environmental challenges have arisen due to globalization, climate change, and other factors. The One Health framework aims to address these challenges using an integrated, transdisciplinary approach that recognizes the interdependence of human and ecological health. To address these challenges, coordination is required between health and governance systems that vary in structure and resilience across geographies and across community, regional, and global levels. This Collection welcomes original research on all aspects of One Health, with the aim of showcasing a broad range of perspectives that explore potential solutions and future directions in this area.”
“One Health focuses on the interdependencies of humans, animals, plants, and their surrounding environments,” said Charles. “The ultimate goal is to improve overall health and wellbeing through activities such as combating infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance as well as improving food, water, and national security.”
Last summer, Charles joined the editorial board of Scientific Reports, the largest open access journal published by Nature Research.
Charles leads PNNL’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Driven One Health Security team, which is focused on disrupting health threats and their impacts. Leveraging PNNL’s leadership in operational AI and One Health, the team is working at the local, regional, national, and global levels to achieve optimal health and security results.
Charles is also serves as an associate editor for CABI One Health and as an editorial board member for Pathogens.
