In a new video series this fall, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is highlighting six scientific and technical experts in the national security domain. Each was promoted to scientist and engineer level 5, one of PNNL’s most senior research roles, earlier this year and has made significant contributions to the national security science, technology, and innovations developed at PNNL.

Mark Jones is a key technical leader and contributor to what the future of airport security will look like.

“For me, personally, it's very exciting to play a role in the development of these new technologies—to really understand that things that you're working on personally as an engineer are really transforming the way that America will be safer,” said Jones.

One of these new developments is a millimeter wave imaging system that can look through the bottom of your shoes and detect concealed threats inside. This technology won an 2020 R&D 100 Award in the IT/Electrical category and is intended to play an integral role in improving the airport security experience for travelers.
